Ceramic Filtration Upgrade for Drinking Water Supply in Surat
Project overview
An existing river water treatment plant supplying drinking water to Surat city was rehabilitated and revamped to address increasingly challenging raw water conditions.
Challenge
High solids carryover during the monsoon season, along with taste, odor, and color issues in summer caused by eutrophication and micropollutant ingress from upstream discharges, demanded a superior filtration technology delivered within the same plant footprint.
Solution
CERAFILTEC’s submerged ceramic filtration systems were selected for their ability to handle wide fluctuations in total suspended solids (TSS) while achieving more than double the throughput compared to conventional sand filter beds. This high-capacity performance was achieved without reliance on upstream clarification, enabling a compact and efficient upgrade.
Results & Benefits
An optional hybrid filtration approach, combining ceramic UF with PAC-based ACLF, further enhances the plant’s capability to address PFAS and other micropollutants. The result is a robust rehabilitation solution that delivers consistently high filtrate quality, low turbidity, improved color, and stable taste and odor, across all seasons, ensuring reliable drinking water production for Surat’s growing needs.
